Saccadic System
Lee Seung-Han

Abstract
Saccade is a rapid eye movement that shift the line of sight from one object to another. Saccades include quick phases of vestibular and optokinetic nystagmus, and the rapid eye movements during REM sleep, as well as voluntary and involuntary shifts of fixation. Besides the ocular motoneurons in the oculomotor, trochlear, and abducens nuclei, several types of neuron in the brainstem such as excitatory and inhibitory premotor burst neurons, and omnipause neuron, are critical for saccade generation. The superior colliculus, the cortical eye fields, the basal ganglia and the cerebellum are working as higher-level controllers of the brainstem saccadic pulse generator.
